Compromise or Forced Compromise?

The Netherlands [ENA] The world is witnessing intriguing developments, particularly after Donald Trump’s return to the presidency. With his speeches and bold statements, he never fails to capture global media attention. We can recall his remarks about Greenland, Canada, and other countries. However, in this article, I would like to shift the focus back to Ukraine, more precisely, the events concerning Ukraine.

A year ago, when the Russia-Ukraine war began, the entire Western world, including the United States, stood firmly behind Ukraine. This support was not merely symbolic; both the EU and the U.S. provided Ukraine with extensive military and financial aid. However, this war has also inflicted significant economic damage on Europe. Russia has consistently stated that it will never accept Ukraine joining NATO, and this stance remains unchanged today. Ukraine, on the other hand, is fighting to reclaim its lost territories.

The West remained committed to supporting Ukraine, with many believing that Russia would eventually be forced to retreat. However, Trump’s return to power has altered this trajectory. His willingness to engage in talks with Russia was anticipated, and it has now materialized. More notably, Trump is openly stating that Ukraine must make concessions. Recently, at the U.S.-Russia negotiations in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine’s fate was discussed—without Ukraine being invited. In response, President Zelensky declared from Munich that Ukraine would not accept any agreement made without its participation. Shortly after, the U.S. extended an invitation to Ukraine, but Ukraine declined to attend.

Instead, Zelensky traveled to Turkey, raising further questions about the behind-the-scenes political maneuvering. The situation is becoming increasingly complex. Trump’s stance has intensified tensions, and he has even called Zelensky a "dictator." It is evident that Trump sees Ukraine’s natural resources as a key interest and aims to pressure Ukraine into concessions. Europe appears to oppose Trump’s approach, but how sincere is this opposition? While Europe still claims to support Ukraine, there is speculation that some European nations might ultimately align with Trump’s strategy.

At this point, we are mere observers of the visible aspects of these events. However, history has shown that the unseen elements eventually come to light. Given the current trajectory, a ceasefire seems inevitable in the near future, followed by a peace agreement—because no war lasts forever. As President Erdoğan once stated alongside Zelensky: "A war has no winners, and peace has no losers." A powerful sentiment, yet in reality, concessions must be made. The question remains: who will make the greater compromise?
