The Netherlands [ENA] The Dutch Government Falls – Once Again Due to Migration Policy. In the Netherlands, the government has announced its resignation. The cabinet led by Prime Minister Dick Schoof collapsed on June 3, 2025, after Geert Wilders withdrew his Party for Freedom (PVV) from the coalition. Disagreements over migration policy led to this outcome. Schoof’s cabinet did not last long – it survived only a year.

Wilders demanded strict measures, such as closing the borders and shutting down asylum centers, but failed to gain sufficient support from coalition partners VVD, NSC, and BBB. As a result, he pulled his party out of the coalition. Following the PVV’s withdrawal, Prime Minister Schoof submitted his resignation to King Willem-Alexander. Until new elections are held – likely in October or November 2025 – the current government will continue in a caretaker role. The government’s fall could delay important decisions, such as increased defense spending and preparations for the upcoming NATO summit.

Outgoing cabinet members will continue to serve in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed. A caretaker government is not authorized to introduce new policies and may only handle day-to-day affairs. The date of the next parliamentary elections is expected to be announced soon. This latest collapse once again highlights the persistent tensions surrounding migration in Dutch politics. The previous government, Rutte IV, also fell due to the same issue.
